About the project:

By offering physical education and all kinds of sports programs, this project prevents kids (6-16 years) from taking refuge in alcohol, drugs and crime, which are structural problems in the poorer neighborhoods in Quito. Even though frisbee, handball and athletics are played here, football – who would’ve guessed – is the number one sport and the kids love it. Here they learn the values of rules, discipline, team play and most importantly fairness and respect. The sports classes are far more than just recreational activities and can have a major social impact. For them this is a safe and encouraging environment and it can help them develop new perspectives away from their conflicted backgrounds. From participating in one of the sports programs it’s just a small step to get involved in one of the project’s other programs like English classes or the talent program that tries to involve families and aims to further individual talents. Motivated and motivating volunteers with a passion for sports are needed all year around. Training groups of kids, organizing sport events, keeping in touch with the kids and their parents and getting involved in the organization’s day to day work are just a few of the tasks volunteers could be put up to.
